The above lines were said by the famous freedom fighter, Shahid Chandrashekhar Azad. The title AZAD was given to him by the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Childhood

The born name of Azad was Chandrashekhar Tiwari. The parents of Chandrashekhar were Pandit Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi. The great men Chandrashekhar Azad took birth on July 23, 1906, in Bhavra village which is located in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.1906 was the year when the British were ruling in India.

Azad uses to worship Lord Hanuman from an early age. Chandrashekhar Azad completed their school from their village Bhavra itself. Chandra Shekhar has a keen interest in wrestling, swimming, and archery. Chandrashekhar’s family was a follower of Sanskrit as they belong from the Brahmin family. Chandrashekhar’s mother wanted her son to become a Sanskrit scholar so for further studies of Chandra Shekhar she insisted on sending him Sanskrit school.

Here in Varanasi, Chandrashekhar got admission in Sanskrit high school. As he had youthy blood, he met over there with some nationalist who was directly or indirectly participating in the freedom fight.

Revolutionary Movement

When the Mahatma Gandhi’s noncooperation movement was going on the year 1920-21, Azad was in his early age of teens and so participated in the movement actively. That was the first time when Azad got caught by the police. At prison when the officers asked him his name and father name, so he narrated them that His name is Azad(free) and his father name is swatantrata (independence) by hearing this the British officers ordered to give him 15 whiplashes as a punishment.

Participation In Hindustan Republican Association

Later on, with the help of Pranavesh Chatterji Chandrashekhar Azad met to Ram Prasad Bismil, the founder of Hindustan Republican Association. Chandrashekhar Azad joint the association. He robbed the Mother Indias treasury from the British to rais the fund for Hindustan Republican Association.

In the same way, Azad took participation in many of the movement against the British. Kakori conspiracy, Lahore conspiracy,  etc.. Azad also killed the officer who shot Lala Lajpat Rai. During the era, many of the Congress leaders supported  Chandrashekhar Azad.

Vow Of Chandrashekar

To be dead for the mother India, was easily acceptable to Chandrashekhar Azad but to get caught to the British was not acceptable this was the vow of Azad, and to this, he was stuck till the last breath of his life.

Death

The British became very aggressive to catch Azad dead or alive. British had made an announcement of reward 30,000 whoever will inform about him will get the prize. An informer of the police reported about the Azad that on February 27, 1931, at Alfred park of Allahabad, he will be meeting his friends. As soon as the Azad reaches the park, the police surrounded the park and said him to surrender.  Azad and his friend shot many of the policemen; he helped his friends to escape from there. He was severely injured and when he saw that there is no way of escaping he shot himself on the head.

We see that Chandrashekhar Azad has sacrificed his whole life for his mother, India. We Indians should also possess the same love as he was having for our country.
